Searching in Paragraph Styles for Character Styles applied via GREP

In the process of setting a book, I apply a character style via GREP to anything in [[double brackets]]. This calls attention to comments from the editor. By the time the book is ready for the printer, that character style is no longer needed and I like to remove it. Because all of my paragraph styles are usually built off one foundational paragraph style, I can often delete the GREP from that paragraph style and then delete the unused character style. But for some reason that's not working. I bought Search in Styles to help me find any paragraph style that might be holding on to this GREP and character style, but I'm not having any luck. Does Search in Styles search the GREPs within paragraph styles? Many thanks.

mrussem Unfortunately, Search in Styles only lets you search for things that are "searchable" in InDesign's regular find/change. GREP expressions therefore cannot be searched for...

OK. Thanks for confirming. Is there maybe another script offered or some other trick you can think of?

I could write a small script for you to "boost" your license of Search in Styles. But you'd need to tell me the name of the character style being used in the GREP expression of the paragraph style. The script would then go through all paragraph styles, and delete any GREP expressions that use that character style.

Ariel Interesting. That could help—but although I described a specific instance where it would be helpful, in truth it would be handy for things beyond looking for that one specific character style that I use over and over. Two things that would make my life easier would be the ability to search GREPs within paragraph styles and to search the Based On and Next Style settings. But maybe that's a conversation for elsewhere?
